Postwar slabs from Canyon Rim to Olympus Cove
Millcreek has four community councils: Canyon Rim, East Mill Creek, Millcreek and Mount Olympus. Canyon Rim got its name as homes went up near the rim of Parleys Hollow in the 1950s. East Mill Creek takes in homes near the mouth of Mill Creek Canyon. Farms and orchards once covered parts of it. The Mount Olympus council covers Olympus Cove and part of the eastern foothills. Much of Olympus Cove was orchards and grazing land until after World War II. Census survey data puts 5,412 Millcreek homes in the 1950s, more than any other decade. About half of all homes here were built from 1950 to 1979. Slabs that old often show cracks and spalls, so concrete repair on postwar slabs comes before any coating.
A little over half of Millcreek homes are detached houses, 15,073 in the latest Census survey. The median home here was built in 1973, so its slabs have seen more than 50 winters. In a Millcreek basement that old, the slab gets a moisture test before we choose a system. Then a basement floor coating for an older Millcreek home starts with a diamond grind and crack repair. A failed DIY kit gets ground off first, and the finish can be flake or metallic epoxy.
